Favorite memories of good ol' Hudson High

Then:

I remember going with my mother to pick out my senior prom dress... Oh the choices! And then how wonderful everyone looked the night of the prom!
I remember Mr. Schoemaker's English class and how he had all the topics scheduled in 5 or 10 minute increments. WOW, did he cram a lot of good teaching into his time with us, for which I'm still grateful. My freshman year at Kent, I ran into him at the student center and he told me he was leaving teaching because the salary was so low, too low to support a family. It just about brought me to tears.
I also remember Virginia Crawford, my first art teacher, and what fun I had in her classes. She put the fun in art!

And Now

After a career in graphic arts and owning a training business, in 1992 I made a dream come true by selling the business so that I could make art full time. I'm a book artist -- whereas other artists choose paint or clay, my work relates to the book form. I spend quite a bit of my time consulting with educational institutions and showing teachers how to use book arts in their classrooms to enhance literacy. Most recently I've been consulting with the San Diego Museum of Art on their Year of The Book projects which brings literacy-based book arts projects to classroom teachers and helps them integrate it with regular curriculum. It's a blast to see the books the kids come up with!
My artist's books are in the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Women in the Art, and numerous special or rare book collections at universities. But the very best part of working with book arts is seeing kids bring language alive. I also teach in the Graphic and Visual Arts Department at Cuyamaca College.

My husband, Gerry, and also retired, is a landscape photographer. You can see his work at

Because I missed all of the previous reunions -- I called the HHS office and inquired but they didn't know anything about them -- I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you at Reunion 2004!!

Jackie Gant Dann and I meet face-to-face after finding each other on the Internet...
only took 35 years!
J came down from Toronto and is still wearing her "Toronto" coat in the SO CAL night air.

Trooper ... don't even ask what kind of dog he is! Pure mutt, but too smart for us.
